A coupon code for an early-bird rate or a referral reward gives you a trackable, controllable way to offer flexible pricing without permanently changing your listed price.
Steps
1
Go to Coupons
Navigate to Commerce → Coupons. Click Add Coupon.
2
Set discount type
Choose Percentage (e.g., 20% off) or Fixed Amount (e.g., $50 off). Enter the value.
3
Name the code
Enter the code buyers will type at checkout. Make it campaign-specific: EARLYBIRD, WELCOME30, FOUNDER50.
4
Set limits and expiry
Add: maximum total uses, per-customer limit, and an expiry date. Always set at least an expiry date for promotional codes.
5
Apply to products and test
Select which products the code applies to. Then open your checkout page, apply the code, and verify the discount is correct.
Common Mistakes
- No expiry date. A promotional code without an expiry is valid forever. Set the date when you create it.
- No usage limit on broadly shared codes. A code posted publicly without a limit can be used indefinitely.
- Not testing before announcing. A misconfigured coupon applied to the wrong product is a customer service problem.
